So if you really want to learn how to make money online and quit your lame job, just read my guide and you will have a very good understanding of where and how to begin.

How to Make Money Online

Publisher: Text Links

You can make a great deal of money by simply selling text links on your website.  Some website owners like to purchase text links on other websites because it helps them with SEO (Search Engine Optimization, which we will cover in length in a later section).  It's easiest to explain how this works through an example:

  • You are WebmasterA and own WebsiteA, which is a website about Weight Loss and is currently established and ranks well in the search engines.
  • WebmasterB owns WebsiteB, and his WebsiteB is also about weight loss.
  • WebmasterB wants his WebsiteB to start ranking in the search engines for the keyword "Weight Loss Tips".
  • WebmasterB discovers your WebsiteA, and contacts you.  He wants you to place a simple text link somewhere on your WebsiteA, pointing to his WebsiteB with the anchor text "Weight Loss Tips" (Anchor text is the portion of text that is actually linked, usually the blue text with an underline).
  • You (WebmasterA) agrees to place a link on your WebsiteA to his WebsiteB for $30 a month.
  • You're happy because you make money, and WebmasterB is happy because it helps his site rank for that keyword.

The above example is the basic premise of how text link advertising works.  Webmasters who are interested in purchasing text links from other websites do it because it helps their websites rank for particular keywords.  It helps them because every external website that links *to* their website is considered a Backlink.  Search engines like Google have systems called Spiders.  These spiders crawl millions of webpages every day.  Every time a spider sees that a website is linking to another website with particular anchor text, the spider takes note of this.  The search engine spiders think to themselves, "If all of these websites are linking to this particular website with this particular anchor text, then we should rank it higher for the keyword in that anchor text!".  This is why there is a demand for text link advertising, and it's one way you can make money on your own website.

Text Link Advertising Considerations

  • Google PageRank
Every website (and every single web page) has a Google PageRank (or PR).  Pagerank is based on a scale of 0-10.  0 being the lowest pagerank and 10 being the highest.  A new web page always starts out with a Pagerank of 0.  Factors involving how high of a pagerank you have is determined by a range of factors.  The most important factor is the quality of backlinks pointing to that page.  When I say "quality", I mean other web pages that have high PR, that are relevant to the subject of your web page, and are established in the search engines.  Quality definitely trumps quantity when it concerns pagerank.  The more pagerank the page(s) on your website has, the more money you can make through text link advertising.

You can download a PageRank extension for FireFox here.  This extension will show you the Pagerank and Alexa ranking of every page you visit.

  • Be Conservative
You definitely do not want a lot of external links on your website.  If you place too many outbound links (outbound or external as in links pointing to other websites), then it lessens the value of your website, at least in the eyes of most search engines.  It will become rather obvious that you are intentionally selling links on your website, and could result in a loss of search engine rankings / placements - which is a BAD thing!

  • Searh Engines frown upon selling text links
While search engines discourage selling text links, there is nothing they can do about it, other than to penalize websites with excessive outbound links.  The reason they frown upon selling text links is because it's an intentional attempt to alter their search results.  For a search engine, an ideal world would be one in which every web page that ranked for a given term, did it 100% naturally.  But that's far from the case, in almost every search term you can think of, a good portion of the top 10 results made it there through intentional SEO.

Text Link Advertising Services / Resources

There are several text link advertising services that automate the process of selling text links on your website(s).

  • LinkXL
This service allows you to place a script on your website that will automatically index every keyword your website offers.  You can control which pages you want to sell text links on.  Then advertisers can bid on specific keywords, and choose to purchase text link(s) on your website.  It's 100% hands free for publishers.

  • Text-Link-Ads
This is perhaps the most popular service for text link advertising.

  • Forums
Many webmasters choose to sell their own text links without the above services, and do it through webmaster forums.

    1. Sitepoint Marketplace
This is a popular service to buy and sell text links, though it does cost a certain amount for listing.

    2. DigitalPoint Link Sales Forum
Free to post a thread advertising your link sales.

    3. V7N Links Forum
Free to post a thread advertising you link sales.

In most cases, text link advertising should always be a supplemental income source and not a primary means of making money.  You never want to overdo it and end up hurting your site in the search engines.
