Beneath, you will find a very elaborate guide (22,000 words) I personally wrote about making money online. I wrote it with the anticipation of selling it, but because I'm so giving, I decided to make it free (the same day I launched the version that cost money.)

SEO: OnSite Optimization

    The very first step in effective SEO is performed on the On-site optimization stage.  On-site optimization is the process of ensuring all of the content on your web page(s) is correctly formulated.  Content is everything that the search engine spiders see.  It's not visual like pictures, colors or design, but rather textual.  To see exactly what content is, you need to view the actual HTML of the page you want to rank in the search engines.  There are two important and interlinked aspects of On-site optimization; HTML tags and keywords.


Keywords

    Let's say for example your website is about losing fat, and you want your home page to rank for the search term "losing fat".  It would be in your best interest that you mention the keyword "losing fat" several times throughout the page in the various HTML tags mentioned below.  Then once search engine spiders crawl your page, they will see that specific keyword mentioned several times, and it will associate your home page with that keyword more-so than other pages that don't mention it only hardly mention it.

    It's also very possible to make a single web page rank for several search terms.  That's why it's good practice to perform keyword research (mentioned in the previous section) and choose up to 3-5 search terms to rank for a single page.  Each page should ultimately have 1 primary keyword with a few other secondary keywords.  Once your page begins to rank, you will also find that you will receive traffic from other long-tail keywords.  Long-tail keywords are keywords that contain several words within the search, in which your website ranks for.  Long-tail keywords are not competitive, but if your page happens to mention a specific keyword that someone is searching for, it will rank very easy for that term.

    One thing you shouldn't do is spam your keywords.  It's called keyword spam and search engine spiders like Google are very smart in detecting it.  The goal with SEO is to make everything (on-site and off-site optimization) appear 100% natural.  So this means excessive placement of specific keywords will get you penalized and will make your ranking attempts very difficult.

    Some people in the past have even tried making the font color of their keyword spam the same color as the background of the page. While this will hide it from the visitor, it won't hide it from the search engine spiders.


HTML Tags

    If you aren't familiar with HTML, please read this guide from W3Schools first.  HTML tags serve multiple purposes.  They provide physical structure to the layout of the website, and they also provide logical structure to your content.  There are many different HTML tags in which you can place your target keywords.  Below I will list the most common HTML tags to use in correlation with keyword placement.

  • Meta Keywords and Meta Description
    The very first opening HTML tag of every website is the <html> tag.  At the very end of a website, it ends with the closing </html> tag.  The second tag is always the <head> tag.  The <head> tag is closed just before the <body> tag.  In between the <head> tag is where you need the meta keywords and description tags. 

    An example of both looks like this:

    <meta name="keywords" content="corporate identity, logo design, business cards, website design, templates, print design" />
    <meta name="description" content="All forms of print design, web design and design education. Over 8 years experience and quick turn around times." />

    The keywords tag is where I begin my on-site optimization.  These are the keywords that you've chosen to target, and they're separated by commas.
    The description tag is usually what search engines will choose as the description that shows beneath the title of your website in the search results.  Though it's important to note that it doesn't always show the description depending on the keyword that was searched.  The description should be no more than 2 to 3 sentences long and should mention your primary keyword along with a secondary keyword or two.  It's important to make it sound natural and correctly worded with grammar in mind.

  • Title Tag
    The title tag is also to be placed within the <head> tags.  Every page needs an associated title tag.  The title of your web page should mention your primary keyword and 1 to 2 secondary keywords.  They shouldn't be listed out like the keywords tag, but rather a very simple and to-the-point sentence about the page with your keywords in mind.  The title tag is what is shown as the title at the top of the browser, and is also what search engines use to show your website in the search results.  If you do a search on Google for any term, you will find that they usually will not list more than 10-12 words from the title tag.  Keep this length in mind when choosing your title.

    An example of effective title tags are:

    <title>Logo Design DIY Do It Yourself Logo Design Free Logo Design</title>
    (This tag has mentioned "Logo Design" 3 times, and also a secondary term "Free Logo Design" as well.  Although this example borderlines keyword spam territory, it ranks well.)

    <title>Website Design Tutorial | How to Design a Website</title>
    (This tag mentions 2 often searched for keywords, this is from my own page which currently ranks #1 for the term "How to Design a Website")

    <title>How to Design and Produce your own Website - Rocketface&reg; Workshop</title>
    (This tag is not ideal because no one is searching for a keyword like "How to Design and Produce your own Website", it could rank better by specifically mentioning that keyword without unnecessary clutter in the middle.)

  • H1, H2, H3, H4, H5 and H6 Tags
    These are all heading tags.  The "H" stands for Heading.  H1 is the most important tag of all.  It's where you should mention your keyword once.  H2 is the second most important, and so on.  Only the H1 tag should be used once, however the other tags can be used multiple times.  The reason there are 6 heading tags is because it allows you to prioritize sections of your content.  I always advise others to use at least the H1, H2 and H3 tags for each page they're attempting to optimize.  You can use H1 for your primary keyword, and the others for your secondary keywords.

    Here is an example of an H1 Tag:

  • Paragraph Tag
    Whenever you have a sentence of paragraphs of text, you will almost always use the paragraph tag.  You can use as many paragraph tags as you need. 

    Here is an example of a Paragraph Tag:

    <p>Not only am I going to cover every step in detail, but also provide the reasoning and principles behind the decisions I make. Other
    design tutorials out there only focus on the instruction aspect, but to truly become a better designer you have to understand the
    principles and concepts that go into effective website design. All of these principles will help you understand how to make a website.</p>

    (As you can see from this example, several keywords were mentioned effectively without appearing like spam. (design tutorials, website design, how to make a website.)

  • Link Tag
    Whenever you link to a page within your own site, or to an external website, you have to use the link tag.  The text that goes between the opening link tag and the closing link tag is called the anchor text.  It's also a tag in which you can mention your keywords.  The link tag is also an important way to mention keywords that pertain to the page or site that you're linking to.

    An example of a Link tag:

    <a href="http://how.todesignyour.com">Video Tutorials</a>
    (The href="" lets the browser know where to send the visitor once they click the link.  If you're linking to an external website, you simply put the full URL there.  If you're linking to a specific page on your own website, you only have to put the filename of the page.)

  • ALT & Title Tag
    ALT allows you to describe an image.  The Title tag is not only to be used within the <head> tags.  It can be used inside the table, link and form tags as a way to describe them.

    Here is an example of ALT tags:

    <img src="image.jpg" alt="This is the description of the image" />
    (As you can see, you can easily use keywords within the alt tag, but you should limit it to a single sentence of text.  The text you place within the alt tag does not appear on the website, it only shows as a level when someone hovers over the image you're describing.)

    Here is an example of Title tags:

    <a href="a_link.html" title="The title of this link">Anchor text</a>
    <table width="250" height="400" title="The title of this link"></table>
    <form action="" method="post" title="The title of this form"></form>


    There are other tags, but these tags are the ones you should always focus on when performing on-site SEO.


Research!

    If you're entirely new to this, a good way to learn is by typing keywords in the search engines and looking at the source (html) of top ranked websites.  See what it is that they do and find the commonalities.  Not every result will be 100% perfect, but the more you research, the more you will learn about on-site SEO.
